In a movie called Mission Impossible, Tom Cruise used a series of high-tech bifocal eyeglasses which is able to shoot, transmit images and display confidential information. Now, a similar high-tech glasses will bring good news for millions of visually impaired people. Scientists in U.S. have developed a liquid crystal optical glasses, you can obtain a better vision than normal people by simply adjusting the knob on the frame to change the focal length. Scientists have predicted that this technology will open the door to develop intelligent glasses. The latest technology, invented by Arizona university in the USA, has currently been turned over to the scientific academy of the state for invention identification.
The biggest difference between liquid crystal glasses and ordinary glasses is on the lens. Whether it is a nearsighted glass or a farsighted one on the current market, the lens tends to be a solid glass and pitch, which means they only have fixed focus. If the visual acuity is getting better or worse, the user would have to buy new lens. However, the lens of liquid glass consists of crystal liquid wrapped by 2 pieces of thin bifocal glasses. These crystals are exactly the same as that in LCD computer monitors. Through the crystal transparency and focusing ability by changing the strength of current flowing passed through the liquid crystal, so the crystal molecules can be rearranged.
In the identification thesis, the crystal in the lens is a concentric structure. When the weak electric current through the lens, the lens inside the liquid crystal will occur contraction or expansion deformation in less than one second. Thus changing the thickness of the various locations of the crystal layer, thereby changing the lens focal length.
In the trial, the model wearing such glasses can not clearly see the picture in front of 30 cm. The liquid glass makes changes in its focus by adjusting the button on the frame. In the end, the models can see pictures clearly. Such glasses have also achieved good results in the tests done by ordinary people.
Scientists predict that one day, the technology will take the place of all other glasses which are made to make up for eyesight deficiency. By adjusting magnitude of current, the crystal in the lens can change the focus from one to another. This means it is able to freely transfer between nearsighted glass and farsighted glass. When the electricity of the lens closed, the liquid crystal then format a uniform thickness, it will be a plain mirror.
The inventor believes that this technology will be at least replace the bifocal glasses that has been currently widespreaded. In addition, glasses manufatured by this technology will particularly be suitable for drivers to increase the driving safety in the future. If combined with the technology of controlling the current automatically and the new products will be absolutely free from manually operation to become the real smart bifocal lens.
