In the movie "Mission Impossible", Tom Cruise used a series of high-tech prescription sunglasses with image pickup, image transmit and display of confidential information. Today, a similar high-tech glasses will bring the Gospel to millions of visually impaired people. Scientists in U.S. have developed a liquid crystal optical glasses, you can obtain a better vision than normal people by simply adjusting the knob on the frame to change the focal length. Scientists have predicted that this technology will open the door to development of intelligent glasses. This latest technology is the invention of the University of Arizona USA and it has now been delivered to the state Academy of Science for invention identification.
The biggest difference between liquid crystal zooming glasses and ordinary glasses lies in lens. Currently whether the shortsighted glass or hyperopia glass on the market, their lenses are mostly solid glass and resin, which means they only have a fixed focal length. If the vision got better or worse, the user would have to get a new one. However, the lens of liquid glass consists of crystal liquid wrapped by 2 pieces of thin prescription eyeglasses. These crystals are exactly the same as LCD computer monitors on the crystals. Through changing the strength of current flowing through the liquid crystal, the crystal molecules can be re-arranged thereby to change the crystal’s transparency and focusing ability.
In the identification thesis, the crystal in the lens is a concentric structure. Liquid crystal inside the lens will occur contraction or expansion deformation in less than one second when the weak electric current pass through the lens. Thus, the thickness of the crystal layer will be altered so as to change the focus.
In the trial, the model who wears such glasses can not see the picture being 30 cm far away from him. But by adjusting the knob on the frame, the focal length of liquid crystal glasses has changed, he can clearly see the final model image. Such glasses have also achieved good results in the tests done by ordinary people.
Scientists predict that one day, the technology will take the place of all other glasses which are made to make up for eyesight deficiency. By adjusting the current strength, the liquid crystal lens can have a variety of different focal length effects. This means that it can freely switch between myopia glasses and hyperopia glasses. The crystal forms an even thickness which becomes a mat gloss after the current through the lens is shut off.
Inventor believes that this technology will at least replace the current widespread use of bifocal glasses. In addition, glasses manufactured by this technology particularly suitable for the driver to wear in the future to increase the driving safety. If it is combined with the automatic control technology, it is of no need for new products to manually adjust and become a real intelligent prescription glasses.
